The Benjamin OB1000 High Efficiency Oil Boiler's innovative design to improve performance
and efficiency, combined with their remarkable build quality, has made them the pioneering
benchmark for the industry.
How does the Benjamin OB1000 boiler do this?
- Hand welded steel construction. (see our article Steel vs. Cast Iron)
- Wide range of BTU capacity.
- Unique, service friendly, wet leg boiler, with a high efficiency design.
1. Hand welded steel construction.
Welded by hand the OB1000 is made of 1/4" and 3/16" steel and each weld is individually
inspected by the welder after it is created. Benjamin uses steel because it has been proven
to be a better material to build boilers out of. (See our article on Steel vs. Cast Iron)
The Turbulators (they slow down the combustion gasses within the heat exchanger in order to
allow for more BTU removal as they pass by) are made of Stainless Steel 304-2B, not the industry
standard of aluminized steel. The stainless will last much longer as it prevents them from getting
stuck in the boiler, and from having their bottoms burned off.
Benjamin uses thicker steel than many other manufacturers. Because of this, they have been able
to extend their product line's life span beyond that of which is expected. This will save you money
in operation and premature replacement costs. Proving again, that Benjamin can provide comfort in
more than one way.
2. Wide range of BTU capacity.
Because of the versatility of the unit design if you want more BTU's, Simply change out the nozzle
to a larger one. (The OB1000 has a range of 90,000 to 176,000 BTU) They also give you the option of
choosing between the Beckett, Aero, and Riello burners.
3. Unique, service friendly, wet leg boiler with a high efficiency design.
The "DUTCH OVEN" or "WET LEG" design is a concept where you completely surround the firebox with the
cooling water heat exchange medium.
Because the firebox is completely surrounded with water, the temperature of the steel can never
really exceed that of the water on the other side. This prevents a dangerous overheating condition.
If you were going to heat water on your stove top how would you go about it? I suspect that you would
put it into a container, and then set that container over a flame. You can't get much more efficient
than that...Unless you could figure out a way to contain the fire inside of the water, then you would
have something, as very few of the BTUs from the flame would be able to escape to the ambient air.
That is the idea behind the Benjamin Dutch Oven.
Because of this innovative design, the OB1000 has gained Energy Star ratings that place it near the
top of the pack. With a Riello burner running on a Balanced Flue system it is rated with an 87.8% efficiency!
Domestic hot water tubes are located on the front, allowing for limited space installations. Note that
the Coil Plate is mounted in such a way that it ensures that any coil leaks do not drip on the burner.
Also note that the Coil Mount is extended outward from the boiler, eliminating the possibility of coil
drip damage to the shell of the boiler.
All ports are Couplings instead of Nipples. This eliminates the concern of thread damage when unloading
and installing the unit, a design move that is unique to the Benjamin line.
The Aquastat on the OB1000 is mounted directly in the Domestic Hot Water coil plate. This is done so that
when a domestic hot water demand is made, the unit will sense this very quickly, and will enable it to
provide a quicker reaction time.
The OB1000 combustion chamber is made of steel, not the fragile and easily damaged felt wet blanket. This
eliminates the possibility of damage during cleaning, transportation, and installation.
As can be seen in the following graphic. Clean out is easy. 4 screws to remove the top, then two wing-nuts
to gain axis to the top of the combustion chamber.
